Where where the first violins made?
The violin was first made in Italy during the 16th century. It is a four-stringed instrument that is rested under the chin while a bow made of horsehair is drawn across the strings. This causes the strings to vibrate, providing a great flexibility in range and tone.
Early stringed instruments were played by plucking the strings with the fingers. The origin of stringed instruments played by rubbing the strings is linked to the appearance of the bow. The very first bow was a simple stick before the hair-bow was adopted.
Exquisitely crafted instruments created by the Italian master Antonio Stradivari continue to be the most highly prized musical instruments in the world. His design for the violin has served as a role model for violin makers for more than 250 years. Stradivari also made harps, guitars, violas and cellos – more than 1,100 instruments in total. About 650 of these instruments survive today.
Not only can the violin be played as a solo instrument, it is also the predominant instrument of the orchestra. A symphony orchestra uses more than thirty violinists.
Fact File: The history of bongo drumming can be traced to the Cuban music styles known as Changüi and Son. These styles first developed in eastern Cuba in the 19th century about the time that slavery was abolished.
